Beaver Lake Dam
The dam that makes the White River tailwater world class
Beaver Lake Dam creates the lake behind it and releases the cold, clear water that feeds the famous trout fishery downstream. A five minute drive from the cabins.
Beaver Lake Dam at a Glance
Why This Dam Matters
Beaver Lake Dam is a US Army Corps of Engineers dam on the White River in Northwest Arkansas. The dam impounds water to form Beaver Lake, a 28,000 acre reservoir upstream. It also creates something just as valuable on the downstream side, a cold water tailwater that supports a world class trout fishery.
Water is released from near the bottom of Beaver Lake, where the temperature stays cold year round. That cold water flowing into the White River is the reason rainbow and brown trout thrive in Arkansas, a state that is otherwise dominated by warm water species. If you fish the White River, you are fishing because of this dam.
For visitors who are not fishing, the dam is still worth a stop. The view of the spillway, especially when water is being released, is impressive. The area around the dam has pullouts and viewpoints where you can take photos. The whole detour from the cabins is about a fifteen minute round trip.
