The Story

A Chapel That Disappears Into the Forest

Thorncrown Chapel is hard to describe in a way that does it justice. Imagine a tall, narrow chapel built of native wood with walls made almost entirely of glass. Now imagine that chapel set deep in an Ozark hardwood forest, so that the walls dissolve into the surrounding trees. When you are inside, you feel like the forest is the sanctuary.

The chapel was designed by architect E. Fay Jones, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, and it has won numerous design awards since it opened. It has been named among the most important American buildings of the twentieth century. Even if architecture is not your usual interest, it is worth the four mile drive from the cabins to see in person.

Thorncrown is a working chapel with worship services during the warmer months. Hours and service schedules change by season, so check the official website or a local visitor guide before heading out. Visits are typically short, thirty to forty five minutes is enough for most guests, which makes it easy to pair with a meal in downtown Eureka Springs afterward.
